Motosugu Sugiyama was born in Shizuoka prefecture about 200 km west of Tokyo. He was a businessman in Tokyo until he retired in 1995 to begin his career as an artist. At the age of 50 in 1975 Sugiyama became the student of Funasaka Yoshisuke to learn the art of woodblock prints. At the age of 80, Sugiyama's woodblocks have attracted international acclaim and a fast growing legion of collectors. Motosugu Sugiyama work can be easily found on the Internet such as https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1595&bih=886&oq=Motosugu++Sugiyama+&gs_l=img.12...5530.5530.0.7126.96.36.199.0.0.0.166.166.0j1.1.0....0...1ac.1.51.img..1.0.0.o23SIFTiOOk&q=Motosugu%20Sugiyama. The print size is 17 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches, which is LARGER than the traditional Shin Hanga woodblock prints. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. All four borders are intact. The artist’s PENCIL SIGNATURE “M. Sugiyama”, the title of the print “Autumn Dusk at Sumida River” and the Limited Number “33/100” written in PENCIL and the date this print was published 1999 are in the bottom border.
