A Beautiful Japanese Woodblock Print Triptych Hiroshige Utagawa Whirlpools of Naruto Straits in Awa Prefecture (2)
This is a very beautiful and romantic Japanese woodblock print triptych “Utagawa Whirlpools of Naruto Straits in Awa Prefecture” from the famous Edo artist Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858) published by the YuYuDo printmaker made in 1970s. This woodblock print is a classical representation of Hiroshige’s mastery of romantic scenery of Japanese in Edo Era. This woodblock print is from my family seven-decade Japanese woodblock prints and Asian Art collections. The three panels are separate. The size of each panel is 11x16 inches. The artist’s signature and his chop mark are close to the lower left edge of the left panel while the carver and printer’s chop marks are in the lower left border of the left panel. There is one censor seal at the lower right corner and two censor seals at the upper right corner of each panel. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers on the Japanese Washi paper. This woodblock print TRIPTYCH is not attached to any backing paper or cardboard and strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of the original Japanese Mulberry paper. Except for a very tiny foxing spot in the top border of the left panel, which does not affect the images, this woodblock print is in excellent condition.
