Description & History- This is a HUGE very beautiful, special and LIMITED-NUMBER (49/80) original Japanese woodblock Shin Hanga print “Shiretoko Sunset” PENCIL SIGNED by the Famous Taisho/Showa Shin Hanga woodblock print master Hashimoto Okiie (1899-1993) made in 1986 IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. This is an original woodblock print 30 years old. This woodblock print is from Dr. Ben family seven-decade old collection of Japanese woodblock prints and Asian Art.

Hashimoto Okiie is a famous Shin Hanga woodblock artist in the Showa Era. Hashimoto Okiie was born in Tottori prefecture; studied at Tokyo School of Fine Arts; taught art and then became principal of Tokyo First Women’s High School until he retired in 1955 to devote all his time to print making. He is well known for strong, colorful prints of gardens, castles, and nature scene. He is as famous as Kawase Hasui and Hiroshi Yoshida. They opened a new Era of Ukiyoe and formed the core of Shin-Hanga. Hashimoto Okiie’s work values at thousands of dollars and is highly searched for by collectors all over the world. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. The artist’s chop mark is at the lower left corner of the print while the PENCIL WRITTEN LIMITED-EDITION (49/80), the title of this print “Shiretoko Sunset”, the artist’s PENCIL SIGNATURE, and the date this print was made 1986 are in the bottom border. Four borders are intact. This ORIGINAL woodblock print is not attached to any backing paper or cardboard and strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of the original Japanese mulberry paper. As far as I can tell there are no defects, stains, or foxing, this ORIGINAL woodblock print is IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
