This is a very beautiful, special and LIMITED-NUMBER (257/300) original Japanese woodblock Shin Hanga print “Kumamoto Castle in the Night” PENCIL SIGNED by the Famous Taisho/Showa Shin Hanga woodblock print master Hashimoto Okiie (1899-1993) made in 1978.   This is an original woodblock print 41 years old.  This woodblock print is one of the core collections of a large number of gorgeous, differently styled Japanese woodblock print collections in my family. We are gradually selling them.  Hashimoto Okiie is a famous Shin Hanga woodblock artist in the Showa Era.  Hashimoto Okiie was born in Tottori prefecture; studied at Tokyo School of Fine Arts; taught art and then became principal of Tokyo First Women’s High School until he retired in 1955 to devote all his time to print making.   He is well known for strong, colorful prints of gardens, castles, and nature scene.  He is as famous as Kawase Hasui and Hiroshi Yoshida. The size of this ORIGINAL woodblock print is 12 1/2 x 10 inches.   The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. The artist’s chop mark and the title “Kumamoto Castle” are at the lower right corner of the print while the PENCIL WRITTEN LIMITED-EDITION (257/300), the title of this print “Kumamoto Castle in the Night”, the artist’s PENCIL SIGNATURE, and the date this print was made 1978 are in the bottom border.  Four borders are intact.  This ORIGINAL woodblock print is not attached to any backing paper or cardboard and strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of the original Japanese mulberry paper. This ORIGINAL woodblock print was framed in the past 40 years.  Except for some very minor foxing in the borders, this ORIGINAL woodblock print is in good condition.  It is hard to find a LIMITED-NUMBER (257/300) original Japanese woodblock print of such a beautiful scene PENCIL SIGNED by the Showa woodblock print master Hashimoto Okiie in the public nowadays.
