Extra Large Japanese Woodblock Print Hashiguchi Goyo Sanjo Bridge Kyoto
You are bidding on an EXTRA LARGE, very beautiful and rare Japanese woodblock Shin Hanga print “Sanjo Bridge Kyoto” from the famous Shin-Hanga woodblock print artist Hashiguchi Goyo (1880-1921) published by YuYuDo Printmaker IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. This woodblock print is one of the core collections of a large number of Asian art and Japanese woodblock print collections in my family and we are gradually selling them. The same print can be easily found on Internet such as
http://www.ohmigallery.com/DB/ItemDetail.asp?item=7940, http://www.theartofjapan.com/ArtDetail.asp?Inv=08092439. Information on Hashiguchi Goyo and the prices of his woodblock prints can be easily found on Internet. Because Goyo died at age 41, he only made 14 woodblock prints in all his life, and most of them were destroyed by fire, weather and earthquake including the woodblocks. Goyo is one of the most famous and gifted artists in Taisho (1912-1925) Era in Japan. The artist’s signature, his chop mark, title of this print, and the date of the print “January Taisho 9 (1924)” are at the lower right corner of the print. The size of the print is 19 x 12 1/2 inches, which is much LARGER than the traditional Shin Hanga woodblock prints. The colors, which are vivid and vibrant, are in layers. This woodblock print is not attached to any backing paper or cardboard and strong ink bleeding can be seen through the back of the original Japanese mulberry paper. All four borders are intact. The names of the publisher YuYuDo chop mark is in the lower left border while the carver and the printer chop marks are in the lower right border. This woodblock print is IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. It is hard to find a Hashiguchi Goyo’s work in the public nowadays and it is definitely an incredible piece for collecting.
